REVIEW: Jo Below – No Control [EP]

This little five-track beauty came our way from this Helsinki based foursome and I must say I like it – a lot!

Formed in 2017, Jo Below consist of Johanna Kari on vocals, Roni Seppänen on guitar, Jonne Lindqvist on bass and Olli Vartiainen on drums. They combine traditional hard rock with some more modern influences and the result is outstanding!

Track 1, Ms Death is a melodic hard rock number that definitely gets things underway nicely! Excellent vocals from Johanna here demonstrating how well such an angelic voice can work effectively in a rock environment! This was the first single to be released from the EP in January 2021.

Where Are You Now is a little more laid back than the opening track. Superb melody and excellent instrumentation including a fine guitar solo, this song washes over you like a warm, gentle wave.

Track 3 is Another Dimension is an interesting number! This song comprises many different elements that take it into the pop-rock genre, but I do mean that in a good way!

I Confess is the second single to be released from this excellent EP. There’s a touch of a Stevie Nicks to Johanna’s vocal at times on this one. Great guitar work here, making this a perfect choice for a single. You can certainly here some Halestorm influences here!

The EP closes with No Control, a beautiful song with some delightful acoustic guitar and powerful vocals again providing a vehicle for some fine lyrics.

In summary, this is an excellent offering from this new band displaying their versatility to great effect! They are certainly not a one-trick pony, that’s for sure, and I look forward to seeing what else they have in store for us.

No Control is set to be released on 16th April 2021 on the Inverse Records label.
