Are truss rod wrenches Universal?
There are so many different tools designed for adjusting truss rods that it’s nearly impossible to have them all. Many manufacturers include a truss rod tool when you buy one of their guitars. However, not all do, so you may need to purchase the appropriate tool.
Do you need a special tool to adjust truss rod?
The tool needed for this adjustment is a 1/4″ ‘nut driver’ wrench available at any hardware store such as Ace. They used to be small enough to fit, but recently many driver brands seem a little too large and some grinding on the outside diameter may be necessary.
Are all truss rods the same size?
Different guitar builders use different size truss rods and you need the specific type wrench and exact size for your guitar. Some truss rods are adjusted with a socket wrench while others use an allen wrench and others may use different type wrenches.

Can I use an Allen wrench to adjust truss rod?
Most modern guitars have an Allen bolt that is adjusted with, you guessed it, an Allen wrench or key. When you’re adjusting the truss rod, make sure the Allen key is seated properly in the truss rod nut; push it all the way in. If you don’t, the nut can be damaged when you try to turn the wrench.

Is truss rod Allen key?
Not every truss rod uses an Allen key for adjustment – for example, Taylor guitars need a special Phillips head screwdriver and a 1/4″ nut driver. But if your guitar has the original truss rod, some Squiers take a 3/16″ Allen key.

You basically want the truss rod to stop at the heel, before the neck joint, and stick out the head far enough that you get a wrench in it.

Does tightening truss rod lower action?
Turn the truss rod nut clockwise to counteract this condition. TRUSS ROD TOO TIGHT: When the truss rod is too tight, the neck bows backward. This lowers the string height and increases string buzz. Turn the truss rod nut counter-clockwise to counteract this condition.
How do I know if my guitar neck is straight?
First set the tail end of the guitar on your toe and look down the neck towards the bridge. Look under the low E string across the top of the frets. Comparing the line of the neck to the line of the E string, try to see if the neck is as straight as the string or if the neck looks bowed away from or towards the string.

Should a guitar neck be straight?
Guitar necks are supposed to be as straight as the guitar can handle, however, not every guitar is capable of having a straight neck without intonation issues, fret buzz, or unwanted noises. A straight neck is in between a convex (too much relief) and a concave curve (backbow).

How long should you wait after adjusting truss rod?
It works well if you wait around 15-20 minutes between each turn. I found the most important thing was to just do about 1/4 turn at a time, and to use common sense, if you think your cranking it too hard, you probably are. As long as you feel it has more give, you should be good.

How long does it take for neck to settle after truss rod adjustment?
They are usually high and big change may take a couple days to settle fully in and playing it helps that process. If it’s a big change like that, I usually go say 75% the first time and play it for two weeks.
