You can do this in four steps:

  1. Find the interval which you want to transpose for (between the two types of part). …
  2. Choose your key signature. …
  3. Transpose each note in turn. …
  4. Take care with accidentals – they will not necessarily be the same in both keys (for example a natural in one key might turn in to a sharp in another).


Why are some instruments not in concert pitch?

Some instruments have ranges that do not fit on the staff well when using one of the common clefs. In order to avoid the use of excessive ledger lines, music for these instruments may be written one, or even two, octaves away from concert pitch, using treble or bass clef.

In transposing down to the key of D major, you need to raise the A natural in the key up a half step, to A sharp. If this is confusing, keep in mind that the interval between the old and new (transposed) notes (B natural and A sharp) must be one half step, just as it is for the notes in the key.
